Break the cycle of Tory blunders

-

THE Conservative Party are doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over again.

And a glance back in time to the Thatcher and Major years of the 80s and 90s makes the case clear.

No matter what they say, there is a truth to the cliche about leopards being unable to change their spots.

Newly released Government files from 30 years ago could easily have been written today. All the depressing ingredients are there. There’s dismay from the Civil Service at the prospect of a visit from a truly dodgy US president.

It was Richard Nixon then. It’s the awful Donald Trump now.

Then there’s the jockeying among government ministers for any little extra perks they can get from their taxpayer-funded job.

Thirty years ago, it was chauffeur-driven Jags.

Today, you can take your pick, although the election expenses scandal would be a good start.

And to complete the unholy trinity, there’s a row over buying Scottish votes by making expensive promises to the fishing fleet. So far, so familiar. When you chuck in the background noise about what do to about the EU, it starts to feel a bit like Groundhog Day.

The similarities between then and now shouldn’t be used as an excuse to shrug shoulders.

It should be a very timely reminder that no matter what the Tories say, they’ll never change. And they shouldn’t be allowed to let history repeat itself again.
