£455k gift to feed the homeless
Late bargains a bad deal for travellers
NEARLY 100,000 meals have been bought for homeless people thanks to an online campaign.
Social Bite, who run social enterprise cafes in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, were given a donation of £455,000 after a fundraiser by deals website itison.
The initiative will cover Social Bite’s meal costs throughout the whole of next year.
The money raised is equivalent to 91,116 meals, up from the previous record of 75,755.
Social Bite co-founder Josh Littlejohn said: “We’ve raised enough to not only provide meals and gifts for people who might otherwise be cold, lonely and hungry at Christmas but to also make sure we can provide hot meals and vital support services right throughout 2018.” HOLIDAYMAKERS who snap up last-minute travel deals in “hurry must end” sales are being taken for a ride.
An investigation by consumer website Which? found time-limited offers were pushing travellers into buying holidays which were often available for the same price or less after the deal ended.
Lastminute.com, Virgin Holidays and Sandals were among the firms said by the watchdog to have offered misleading deals.
Rory Boland, Which? travel editor, added: “Our investigation shows that most of the time-limited deals we looked at are nothing of the sort.
“The tight deadlines, emotive language and countdown clocks are all designed to rush us into making a decision but it might not be the right one.”
