WELL LOAN FOR CIFTCI

- EUAN McLEAN sport@dailyrecord.co.uk

MOTHERWELL are set to give Nadir Ciftci’s career a lifeline after the Celtic striker’s loan with Plymouth was cancelled.

The 25-year-old Turkish player joined Celtic in July 2015 on a four-year deal from Dundee United but has failed to establish himself in the Parkhead squad and had been loaned to Eskisehirspor in his homeland in January 2016 and Polish side Pogon Szczecin in January 2017.

Argyle boss Derek Adams took Ciftci on a season-long loan in the summer but he has made just six starts and two substitute appearances without finding the net.

Plymouth have agreed to cancel the loan deal with Fir Park now expected to be the player’s next temporary home.

Motherwell are looking for firepower to replace Louis Moult who has joined Preston and if they land Ciftci he will fight it out with new recruit Curtis Main from Portsmouth for a starting jersey.

Meanwhile, the Steelmen will fly out to Tenerife today after the freezing weather convinced them to hastily arrange a last-minute winter training camp.

The club had originally planned to stay at home but the cold snap forced them to have a rethink as the cost of players being unable to train on frozen pitches could far outweigh the financial hit of taking the team on their travels.

Boss Stephen Robinson said: “Given the recent weather we felt it was important to take the team away to Tenerife to get a few days of warm-weather training.

“This isn’t a holiday for the players. We will use it as intensive training camp.”
