RECORD readers have stepped up to help Joe Carmichael after we revealed his ordeal living in a freezing tent.

The jobless, homeless joiner’s plight touched many hearts – and now he has been housed in a temporary flat as the council try to find him a permanent place.

Grandfather-of-three Joe, 49, has also received several offers of work from people who read of his desperate battle to survive amid night-time temperatures of -7C.

Daniel Sloan, who runs the Second Chance Scotland charity, went looking for Joe yesterday at his makeshift home under the George V Bridge in Glasgow.

He said: “I popped down a couple of times and he wasn’t there. Since the Record story was published, I’ve spoken to people who have work for Joe.

“One guy would like him to help convert his garage.

“I also spoke to a contact down south who might be able to give him a job and lodgings.

“If anyone can get a message to Joe, we’d be happy to discuss it with him.”

A Glasgow City Council spokesman confirmed that Joe had been given housing after we told of his dire situation. Members of their street team took him to the address in the city yesterday.

The spokesman also confirmed he would pass on any messages relating to work for Joe.

He said: “We will make sure that Joe is made aware of the job opportunity and help him to get in touch with the person who has made the offer.”
