Record writer shows it’s easy to rustle up delicious versions of shop favourites
M&S food is never the budget option. But the chain excelled themselves this week by offering a pack of cauliflower “steak” for £2 (normal price £2.50).
This was two slices of raw cauli plus a sachet of green gunk to slosh over the top.
There was such an outcry at the overpackaged, overpriced dish that M&S backtracked and announced they were taking it off the shelves. But is it the only wildly marked-up meal on offer?
We found plenty of other ready-made options at M&S in Jordanhill, Glasgow, that can be reproduced at home for a fraction of the price.
We bought all the fresh ingredients in Aldi and supplemented them with basics from the store cupboard. We estimated the cost of these based on prices at tesco.com and used the ingredients list on the M&S packaging.
For the dried herbs, spices, salt and pepper, where tiny amounts were used, we added 5p to the total cost.
As for the cauliflower, its recipe will now be lost to the world. So, we guessed ....
