DOCUMENTARY
TRANSFORMATION STREET
STV, 9pm THERE are some emotional stories in this compelling series, which follows patients at a private London clinic who are undergoing gender transformation.
An estimated 130,000 people in the UK want to change their gender, and there is unique access here as we see the identity changes become a reality for some of them.
Karen arrives with her son Lucas, 20, who was born a girl, Lauren, and is having a consultation to have his breasts removed. “Bit by bit my daughter is disappearing,” she says, “But boy or girl, I still love him.”
Elsewhere, Danni, 34, a former army commando, is awaiting facial feminisation surgery, and tells of her marriage breakdown after announcing to wife Sue that she wanted to be a woman after just five months.
Patients also undergo makeovers, voice coaching and hormone treatment before the final irreversible surgery.
It’s a fascinating insight but beware of surgical scenes – they are not for the squeamish.
