IT ALL CAME OUT IN THE WASH

-

WATERGATE was the story that had such an impact it gave the world the suffix instantly associated with scandal. A break-in at the Democratic Party offices in the Watergate building in 1973 was linked to president Richard Nixon’s White House administration and eventually led to his resignation.

It was depicted in movie All the President’s Men, which followed Washington Post reporters Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward as they uncovered the exclusive.

But The Post director Steven Spielberg said that if it wasn’t for the events chronicled in his new movie, set two years earlier, there would have been no Watergate.

Spielberg said: “The Post is a very optimistic picture as the outcome determined the future of the Washington Post.

“Without the courage of Ben Bradlee and Katharine Graham, there would not have been enough cojones, combined with women’s intuition, to allow the Post to go after Richard Nixon the way it did. Rather than being a prequel to All the President’s Men, this is what allowed All the President’s Men to get made.”
