On to a looser with wrapped fruit & veg
SHOPPERS are paying up to 50 per cent more for loose fruit and veg compared with produce wrapped in plastic, a probe has revealed.
It is a blow to Prime Minister Theresa May’s plan to make supermarket aisles plastic-free.
MoneySavingExpert found at least half the pick-your-own produce they checked at Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco was between 10 and 54 per cent more expensive than pre-packed items.
The survey found only Waitrose charged less for loose items such as apples and bananas.
The PM this week set out her 25-year green vision, which included cutting pre-packaging.
Gary Caffell, of MSE, said: “It seems ridiculous that packaged fruit and veg can ever be cheaper than loose.”
