A GOLDFISH has become an internet sensation after being nominated in a pet of the year contest.

Daniel was one of dozens of entries to Oban’s Pet Idol.

While others showed dogs and cats enjoying long walks or adventures, Daniel was pictured peeping out from the bottom of his tank.

But his humdrum life has sparked a flood of online humour after his picture was placed in a series of exciting scenarios.

Craig Lang, 26, from Lochgilphead in Argyll, is a pipe major in Mid Argyll Pipe Band and was given Daniel as a birthday present a couple of years ago.

The cheeky piper set up a Facebook page for the fish then posted hilarious snaps.

Since then, Daniel fans have been making online memes in honour of the now-famous fish.

Daniel is seen making a guest appearance on photos of celebrities and landmarks around the world.

As well as clocking up 154 Facebook followers, famous faces – from Prince Andrew to former US president Barack Obama, and Andy Murray to Andy Warhol – have been transformed with Daniel-style makeovers.

The fish has been superimposed on Donald Trump’s hair, on the faces of the members of Coldplay, and used to cover up the modesty of four naked guys on a picture entitled Cold Hot Chilli Peppers.

Daniel is up against fierce competition in the Oban Times contest – from eight dogs and a tup lamb. The closing date for votes is Monday, January 22.
