Belsfield Hotel combines comfort with the elegance the name suggests.
The term “boutique” often suggests small but this hotel is generously proportioned and can cater for lavish weddings as well as weary hillwalkers.
It was originally built for Baroness von Sternberg but was refurbished in 2014 by Ashley designers who melded the Victorian/Italian architecture with modern designs and the countryside pastels for which the brand has become famous.
The 62-bedroom hotel stands in six acres of beautifully landscaped gardens on the east shores of Lake Windermere with many of the bedrooms having dramatic views overlooking Belle Isle.
Bed, breakfast and dinner packages are available for both the Belsfield Restaurant and the more relaxed Brasserie.
The Belsfield restaurant is perhaps a bit overly pretentious with an amalgam of flavours which don’t necessarily always work.
It is a fine dining experience with dishes such as seared king scallops, cauliflower puree, pickled apple, crispy ham, burnt apple puree followed by fillet of stone bass, pearl barley, clams, salsify, baby leeks and octopus. With a range of puddings and cheeses to choose from, you shouldn’t leave the table hungry.
The Brasserie, on the other hand, is more pub grub with burgers, steak and beer-battered haddock – but watch out for the hidden costs if you have booked in for the meal deal.
If you fancy some vegetables or salad with your main course, it will cost about £8 for two on your bill at checkout. In a luxury hotel, it seems a bit penny-pinching.
But the real treat was the bedroom, where the bed was comfort personified.
The suite we stayed in had a massive window overlooking the lake. It was like viewing an ever-changing painting as the sun began to set and the colours slowly changed.
It was utterly delightful and the perfect antidote to day-to-day stresses – and only a few hours drive from central Scotland. include local tours with island routes excursions that are led by people born on the island and candlelit dinners.
