Union bid to save 12 care homes
UNION leaders last night called on Holyrood to step in and prevent care company Bield from “abandoning” scores of elderly people by closing 12 nursing homes in Scotland.
The firm announced their plans in October, blaming financial constraints.
But Unison have warned the closures would be a “disaster”, saying 160 elderly people will lose their home and up to 200 care workers face redundancy.
Bield, a not-for-profit organisation, are to shut homes in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Falkirk, the Borders, Lanarkshire and West Lothian.
Unison’s John Gallacher said they had been “lobbying hard for intervention” to stop the closures. They have arranged a public meeting in Glasgow today for relatives of those affected to voice their concerns.
