Theresa and I are on the same wavelength

DONALD Trump will visit the UK this year – risking the biggest protest the country has ever seen.

The US president and PM Theresa May announced the visit when they met at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, yesterday.

And Trump attacked the “false rumour” that he didn’t like May, insisting they were “on the same wavelength”.

Significantly, the statement did not specify a state visit with all the pomp and ceremony of a Royal appointment.

May offered Trump a formal state visit shortly after his election last year – but MPs demanded it be cancelled.

The visit was debated in the Commons, where Speaker John Bercow said he would not invite Trump on to the premises.

Desperate officials have even considered sending Trump to the Isle of Lewis (where his mother was born) in a bid to avoid huge protests which would dog him across the UK.

In Davos, Trump said: “The Prime Minister and myself have had a really great relationship, although some people don’t necessarily believe that.

“But I can tell you I have a tremendous respect for the Prime Minister and the job she is doing and I think the feeling is mutual from the standing point of liking each other a lot.

“We are on the same wavelength in every respect.”

May said: “We continue to have that really special relationship, standing shoulder to shoulder because we face the same challenges across the world.”

Downing Street said Trump and May had asked officials to finalise the details of the president’s visit later this year.
