Doc: I want to emulate Barry for Light Blues

- ANTHONYHAGGERTY

GREG DOCHERTY last night set out to follow in the footsteps of boyhood hero Barry Ferguson after completing his £650,000 move to Rangers.

The 21-year-old became Gers boss Graeme Murty’s fifth signing of the January transfer window with a four-and-a-half year deal.

Former team-mate and Hamilton veteran Dougie Imrie insists the playmaker could be an Ibrox great while tipping him to shine for Scotland too.

And Docherty singled out ex-club and country skipper Ferguson plus Steven Davis as inspiration.

He said: “Davis more recently but Ferguson particularly in the UEFA Cup run. Both guys have captained the club at different points and gone on to have fantastic careers.

“I’d like to emulate them and hopefully have a career as good as theirs in a Rangers jersey. If I can do that I’ll be happy.”

The lifelong Gers fan had been trailed by Cardiff, Swansea and Preston.

Docherty told Rangers TV: “For me to play for Rangers – and I’ve always dreamed of playing for Rangers during my career – but for it to come so early is just an extra bonus.

“When I heard of the interest there was only one place for me. I want to be part of something special here and that is the plan.”

Docherty could face his former side in three weeks’ time after opting to stay put in Scotland – a call that delighted long-term Accies team-mate Imrie.

The 34-year-old said: “I’ve no doubt he will go on to play every week for Rangers and be a Scotland player in years to come.”

As one player left Accies another came back in after the club U-turned on their decision to axe Georgios Sarris. Boss Martin Canning last month said the Greek was “finished” at Accies after a bust-up in the wake of a loss at Partick Thistle.

But in a statement last night the club said: “At the request of the player and his agent a meeting was convened on Monday. The chairman and manager, having considered their representations, have allowed the player to return to training and he’s now available for selection.”
