A sorry excuse for an apology

Trump: I know nothing about Britain First

DONALD Trump has said he is prepared to apologise for re-tweeting anti-Muslim videos from the far-right group Britain First.

The US president made a half-hearted retraction in a TV interview with Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan.

Trump, whose mum was from the Hebrides, also declared his love for Scotland – raising speculation he may come north during a planned visit to the UK this year.

The president’s three retweets of Britain First material caused a huge diplomatic incident last November, with Theresa May forced to publicly condemn his actions.

Trump later hit back on Twitter, telling the PM to focus on terrorism in the UK. But speaking to Morgan in an interview to be broadcast tomorrow night, he denied he had been promoting Britain First as an organisation.

When Morgan asked for an apology, saying he believed it would go a long way in Britain, Trump replied: “If you’re telling me they’re horrible racist people, I would certainly apologise if you would like me to do that.

“I don’t know who they are, I know nothing about them.

“Certainly I wasn’t endorsing anybody.”

Trump, who owns Turnberry golf course in Ayrshire and the Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire, insisted he hadn’t meant to upset people in Britain.

He said: “I’m somebody that loves Britain, loves the UK.

“I love Scotland. One of the biggest problems I have with winning the presidency is I won’t be able to get back there so often.

“I would be there a lot – very special people, very special place.”

Asked about people who don’t like him, Trump said: “It’s just one of those things. I don’t care.”
