SCOTLAND’S biggest council will ditch plastic straws after primary pupils highlighted the plight of marine wildlife.

The campaign by children at Sunnyside Primary School in Craigend, Glasgow, has inspired the city council to switch to more eco-friendly options.

Dropped straws often end up in the sea, where they threaten seabirds, turtles, whales and fooodnchapin ilf dolphins – or get into the

Sunnyside principal teacher Lisa Perrie said: “This is fantastic news and the children are thrilled. It shows they can make a big difference in the world and that their views really matter.”

From the end of February, the council’s commercial catering division will no longer provide straws with customers’ drinks.

People who ask for one will receive an eco-friendly alternative.

Sustainability convener Anna Richardson said: “The pupils are to be congratulated. They are a true force of nature.” A MESSAGE in a bottle written by Scots schoolkids in the 1980s has washed up 4000 miles away in Florida.

Primary 2/3 children cast the plastic bottle into the North Sea while learning about pirates.

And while their school closed down in 2007, the plasticcoated letter was still in perfect condition when Ruth and Lee Huenniger found it in the wake of Hurricane Irma in September last year.

Retired teacher Fiona Cargill, 60, is certain it was written by one of her classes at Chapelpark Primary School in Forfar.

She said: “It’s amazing. I think it is one class in particular because one of the children was related to a trawlerman in Arbroath who would take the bottle in their boat and throw it a bit further out so it was less likely to wash back ashore.”

Finders Ruth and Lee wrote to the children, not thinking they would get a reply.

Ruth said: “We were pleasantly surprised when we received the response from the previous teacher at the school that is no longer there.

“The bottle and note were amazingly well preserved.”
