New-look Blues can be legends

-

GRAEME MURTY last night challenged his new-look Rangers to become Ibrox legends.

The gaffer has been inspired by sitting alongside club heroes at a Burns Supper.

And after being in the company of Ibrox icons such as Archie Knox and Andy Goram, Murty wants his own players to one day be classed alongside legends by hauling the Light Blues back to the top.

He said: “I was sat next to a table of Rangers legends and I want this team to be able to stand with those legends by being brilliant, by being great.

“The challenge is not just to live up to those guys but to be worthy of standing alongside them.

“The thing that came through for me was their depth of feeling for the club.

“We had The Goalie. Archie Knox was there. Everyone was there.

“You see the history when you come to the club but seeing the guys who made that history makes you hungry.

“It’s fine to look up to them but we want to emulate them, to be able to stand alongside them.

“If we do our job properly, we’ll create a culture that is designed to let us do that. They still have a real burning passion for the club, these great players.

“This club gets under your skin and it’s a very special place.”

Murty believes the legends dream is attainable. He said: “We’re capable of challenging at the top of this league and for every competition we’re in.

“We have an obligation to be a good team and good Rangers’ teams have backed up quality play with success and silverware. “It’s not just a challenge to be a good team for four games out of six. You need to sustain a challenge in every competition.” Murty has built a homegrown core in the squad with Greg Docherty the latest recruit. Wednesday’s win over Aberdeen was a positive start for the new side and he said: “It does help. “If you are unaware of the scale, history and success of this club then you are quickly informed about the standards you have to live up to.”
