Under-21s boss throws hat into ring for top job

SCOT GEMMILL is keen to be considered for the Scotland manager’s job after the SFA earmarked him as a potential shock candidate. Reports emerged at the weekend of Gemmill being in the frame and Record Sport understands the national Under-21 boss has privately expressed

a desire to be considered for the top job by his SFA bosses.

And Gemmill has received a great deal of internal backing from the top brass at Hampden who are set to meet this week to discuss all available options.

It’s likely the credentials of Gemmill and Hibs boss Neil Lennon will be discussed as the board scramble for alternatives after the failure of chief executive Stewart Regan and president Alan McRae to deliver No.1 target Michael O’Neill as the successor to Gordon Strachan.

The SFA board are expected to quiz Regan over his role in the O’Neill debacle on Thursday where they will demand to know why it backfired so spectacularly.

And beleaguered Regan – fighting to stay in his post – will face a further grilling over the end-of-season tour to Peru and Mexico that has infuriated champions Celtic and led to a potential boycott of the trip by Scotland’s top stars.

Despite lacking managerial experience Gemmill, 47, believes he has the skill set needed to take over from Strachan.

He’s already been promoted to the U-21s post from Scotland U-17s boss and his work has impressed many within the SFA. But Gemmill’s CV doesn’t stand up to scrutiny if compared to Lennon who has spent eight years in the frontline at Celtic, Bolton and Hibs.
