Wife-murderer borrowed illegal mobile to stay in touch with mum

WIFE-KILLER Nat Fraser has had six months added to his jail term after using an illegal mobile phone to call his mum.

Fraser, 59, who is serving a minimum of 17 years for the murder of wife Arlene, was caught with the mobile in his cell at HMP Addiewell in West Lothian.

He told a court yesterday that he had borrowed the device – banned behind bars – from another inmate so he could keep in touch with his mum Ibby.

The six-month sentence means his earliest release will be 2030.

Fraser appeared at Livingston Sheriff Court dressed in a grey Adidas T-shirt and jeans and handcuffed to a female security guard.

He pled guilty to having the prohibited phone and admitted having a previous conviction for an identical offence.

Iain Smith, defending, said Fraser had not tried to hide the phone when officers searched his cell and had co-operated fully.

He added: “He borrowed the phone to telephone his mother. He’s not been operating some criminal activity.”

Fraser, from Elgin, Moray, has previously told his visitors that one of the things he missed most in prison was his mother’s homemade soup.

The fruit and veg merchant was twice convicted of organising the killing of mother-of-two Arlene, 33, in 1998 after she made plans to divorce him. No trace of her was ever found. Fraser’s friend Hector Dick gave evidence that Arlene’s husband had hired a hitman to kill her and then burned her body and ground up the remains.
