I’LL SPEAK TO SCORER

-

From Back Page Jags as well as his assist for James Tavernier’s second proves he can go all the way in the game.

Rangers moved within three points of Aberdeen in second and asked about the gesture Murty said: “I didn’t see it. I’ll talk to Josh about it and ask why he did it – if he did it.

“To be perfectly honest I don’t know why Josh does many of the things he does. I’ll have a chat to him and see what he meant by it.

“But let’s talk about his goal which was outstanding. The cross in was great but you still need to finish it and Josh has that execution of the highest order.

“Then in the next breath he will do something that makes you scratch your head. That’s the bit he has to get right because that’s what’s going to take him to the next level.

“When he’s top level he’s great. It’s the bit that makes you scratch your head that makes people pause about him.

“He came into the office the other day and talked for 40 minutes about his game. He feels he has been good but wants to be great.

“We talked about his consistency and his level, the things he is great at and about enhancing them.

“We also spoke about him doing what he does in the back two-thirds of the pitch better to make him more reliable for the team.

“Once he does that I’ve no doubt lots of teams will look at him. He’s got power, pace, a trick and finishes well.

“We just need him to realise the best players in the world make the right decisions 99 per cent of the time. If he wants to get to that level that’s what he needs to tighten up on.

“If he does that he’ll be some player.” Rangers bounced back from Saturday with a professional dismantling of Thistle after weathering an early spell of pressure.

Murty said: “At times we really showed a cutting edge and incisiveness which pleased me.

“You saw glimpses in the game of what we are about, both good and bad.

“I want to see the good stuff more often and when we do it will confirm we are on the right path.

“It wasn’t as inspiring as I would have liked but there was some outstanding play, particularly both goals. If we ally togetherness with good play then we have the quality to take the game away from teams.”

Alfredo Morelos was benched in favour of Jason Cummings but Murty added: “It’s just a squad rotation thing.

“He is young, only 21, has come direct from Finland into our season and has played lots of games. We have a really good squad now and it’s up to us to make sure we husband those resources the best way.”

Jags boss Alan Archibald claimed assistant ref Stuart Stevenson was influenced by the Rangers fans behind him in the stand.

He flagged Ryan Edwards for offside when he almost burst the net with a volley with the game still goalless as well as when the Aussie forced a fingertip stop from Wes Foderingham early on.

Archibald said: “The goal that was chopped off wasn’t offside. It was clearly onside and that’s disappointing.

“We don’t often get those decisions when the linesman is on that side.

“Ryan was a yard onside at the earlier header too and he gave offside to that as well. Maybe it’s coincidence. I’m not sure. You would have to ask him.”
