A SCOTS-BASED artist has told of his surprise after finding out one of his paintings featured on a shirt worn by Justin Timberlake at the Super Bowl.

A landscape stag painting by Martin Ridley appeared on the pop star’s top, created by designer Stella McCartney.

Martin, 50, of Comrie, Perthshire, said: “I was in the dark about that. I knew it was something prestigious because I had a confidentiality thing to keep everything secret even from close friends so I just kept schtum. It was a bit surreal.

“I’m mostly working in isolation so it’s a bit bizarre when things like this come out of the woodwork.

“It took me back a bit. I’ve had quite a lot of inquiries from around the world.

“I came back from a day out in the hills up in the mist and opened my inbox to all the things to correspond with.”

Stella was said to have worked closely with Justin on a custom look for the Superbowl show, inspired by his new album, Man of the Woods. The singer and Jessica Biel have a son called Silas, which translates as Man of the Woods.

The designer said of Justin: “He’s always carried himself with style, so to dress him is a real honour.”

Martin’s original painting, created in 2011, featured three stags. He said: “I wasn’t really involved in the fashion design side of the shirt.

“I thought it looked quite grand.”
