NEW DEAL TAV EYES TREBLE

- CRAIG SWAN

JAMES TAVERNIER has targeted the Treble after signing a new deal at Rangers. The defender revealed his aspirations for the club after penning a three-and-a-half year contract to stay at Ibrox until summer 2021. Tavernier is determined to start lifting major silverware with Gers as well as starring on the Champions League stage. The 26-year-old, left, said: “I want to win the league. I want to win the Treble.

“I want to aim high and be playing in the Champions League – and this club has the capability to do that.

“We’ve got the fans behind us all the way. It’s down to the players to push really hard to get to that point.

“I was in Jimmy Bell’s kit room and you see the pictures

he’s got of all the squads with the trophies.

“That’s what I want to be doing at Rangers, winning trophies and leagues. That’s why I came here.

“I want to write the next chapter at the club. I’m excited about the squad we’ve got.

“We’ve got good numbers and great quality and the displays lately have been good.

“I’m really excited for the second half of this season and the seasons to come.”

Tavernier has been impressive since Graeme Murty was appointed manager and his displays were rewarded with the skipper’s armband for last weekend’s Scottish Cup win over Ayr.

The full-back relished the responsibility and admits he would love to keep hold of the captaincy at Ibrox.

Speaking on Rangers TV, he said: “It was such an honour to get that captaincy. I have always been a vocal player on and off the pitch – you will always hear me.

“When I first came here I wanted to captain Rangers. I have had the chance to do that now.

“The gaffer’s given me greater responsibility in the team so I need to keep going.

“I feel at home here. I am on social media and I have had a great response from the fans. Everything is going in the right direction at the moment.

“It was a perfect moment on Sunday and this new deal is the icing on the cake.

“I’d love to be the captain of this club. I think I have grown into a player who can take the pressure on his shoulders.

“He [Murty] gets on me a little bit more. He has brought a really good game in me and I’m enjoying playing under him.”
