Package holidays begin again three years after 38 deaths in Sousse

A MOUNTED policeman passes the empty sunbeds on the shore. Alert and watchful, an automatic rifle across his shoulder, he seems prepared for anything.

Almost three years on from the Tunisian terror attack that left 38 dead, security is naturally the number one concern.

And he will be a welcome sight as tourists finally head back to the country’s beaches.

This week, Thomas Cook became the first operator to restart package holidays and since Tuesday packed flights have been leaving Birmingham, Manchester and Gatwick.

Understand­ably, there are no tourists at the former Rui Imperial Marhaba Hotel near Sousse, where gunman Seifeddine Rezgui began his rampage, which killed 30 Britons.

Instead, after being greeted with music and dancing at Enfidha airport, holidaymak­ers are heading to Hammamet, 60 miles up the coast. Among the first to return were Keith Griffiths and wife Yvonne, from Wrexham, north Wales. Lorry driver Keith, 63, said: “A week before the attack, we were staying in the same hotel. We saw it on the news and thought, ‘My God, that was a near miss.’ But the Foreign Office say it’s now OK if you’re careful. “If you really felt nervous you’d never go to Warrington, Manchester or London again. “You can’t feel like that. They’ve had a couple of incidents here but they’ve had more in London so that wasn’t going to stop us.” After the massacre, the Foreign Office advised only “essential travel” and tourist numbers fell
