KEY BATTLES

-

AJER v ZABOLOTNY THE 19-year-old Norwegian Kristoffer Ajer is four years younger than Jozo Simunovic but in last week’s first leg he was very much the senior partner in the heart of the Hoops defence, exuding calmness and confidence.

Anton Zabolotny, 26, is a late developer, having worked his way up to the top tier in Russia after years spent toiling in the lower leagues. He signed from Tosny in December – two months after making his debut for the national team – and had Zenit’s only effort on target at Parkhead last week. NTCHAM v KUZYAYEV ZENIT coach Roberto Mancini singled out Olivier Ntcham for praise after his impressive contribution in Glasgow.

The midfielder’s strength, passing ability and intelligent movement make him a potential matchwinner. However, his dead-ball deliveries need to improve.

Daler Kuzyayev can play wide or in the heart of Mancini’s midfield but he is predominantly a defensive player and, after being caught unawares by Ntcham’s display seven days ago, the Russian international will be primed to prevent a repeat. FORREST v SMOLNIKOV SCOTLAND winger James Forrest has 16 goals already in the finest campaign of his career. He took some severe punishment last week but the 26-year-old – already odds-on to be named Scottish football’s Player of the Year – will come back for more tonight.

Igor Smolnikov is a right-sided player currently being used on the opposite flank by Mancini and Forrest will look to get outside him. He struggled to get close to his opponent in the first leg and, perhaps tellingly, the fouls committed on the Celt were all by other players.
