Trump gun plans trigger disbelief

-

IN THE baffling world of Donald Trump, teachers should be trained to shoot people.

And if you’re unlucky enough to be caught in a hail of bullets, you can launch a public appeal for money to pay your medical bills.

This is not a joke. These are two examples of reality in the US under the idiot currently demeaning the office of president.

Trump is so in debt to the gun lobby that he sincerely thinks the answer to assault rifles is more weaponry.

It is scarcely believable that an advanced, enlightened nation could even consider putting weapons in schools.

What on earth are children supposed to make of this?

Already in fear of a killer bursting into their school, they now have to imagine a shoot-out as teachers and coaches start firing back.

Where would you keep these weapons? Next to the chalk? Under the desk? In the stationery cupboard beside the staplers? It’s so ludicrous that it invites ridicule. Frankly, it is remarkable that a newspaper has to give actual credence to such lunacy.

But this is a development that must be taken seriously.

Trump is taking his lead from malign characters like Wayne LaPierre, the National Rifle Association’s executive vice president.

He’s not a joke, he’s a man who is determined to keep guns in America, even if it means smearing survivors of school shootings.

Meanwhile, the leader of the free world boasts his nuclear “button” is bigger than his enemy’s. He sees schools as militarised institutions. This is the guy who took notes with him to a meeting with bereaved families reminding him to listen to their concerns. He is a dangerous, deluded, brittle man. And you wouldn’t trust him to tie his own shoelaces, never mind run the world’s most powerful country.
