Accies kid Fergie can follow in the family footsteps

- EWING GRAHAME

MARTIN CANNING reckons Hamilton starlet Lewis Ferguson can maintain the family tradition by going on to reach the top.

In just five first-team appearances, the 18-year-old looks to have inherited some of the talent from dad Derek, a former Rangers and Scotland midfielder, and uncle Barry, who captained the Ibrox club and his country.

Fergie Jr has been on the losing side in every game so far but Canning insists he’s a winner and can only get better.

The Accies boss said: “He has been great and is playing on merit – it isn’t a case of putting a young player into the team to get experience.

“Lewis is there because he deserves to be, because he’s better than guys who are older and part of his job is to continue to develop.

“Against Rangers last weekend he was involved in most of our key attacking moments. He plays like an experienced pro. He keeps his head down and works extremely hard on his game.”

Ferguson has hit the ground running following Greg Docherty’s move to Ibrox and Canning added: “I wouldn’t say he has surprised me because he was pretty unlucky not to play before.

“But with Greg moving on and Ali Crawford then Darian MacKinnon being out injured, the opening he needed was there. When you get these chances as a kid you have to take them and that’s what he he has done.”
