Brave mum’s gift to help families grieve

Danielle’s charity give other parents who lose baby access to ‘cuddle cot’

A MOTHER who lost two babies in less than three years is helping other grieving families to get access to a “cuddle cot”.

The special cradle keeps a baby’s body cool to prevent it from deteriorating. That way, parents can spend more time with their wee one before the funeral.

Danielle Wilson’s son Junior died in January last year, after being born premature at 26 weeks the previous month.

Her first child, Brooke, was stillborn at 22 weeks in 2014.

The brave 25-year-old has helped to launch Bumblebee Babies, a campaign to support mums who have lost their babies.

The charity opened a shop in Cumbernauld last week, where they were presented with the cuddle cot.

Former admin assistant Danielle, from Foxbar, Paisley, said: “It was a moving day at the cot presentation.

“Businesses donated to pay for the cot, which will go to families who want some more time with their wee one.

“I know these cots aren’t for everyone but I would have used one if it had been available when I had Junior.”

After Bumblebee Babies were launched last year, Danielle said: “I want to use my experiences for something positive. I’ve thrown myself into the charity work and it has kept me going on.”

Brenda Murray, of Community Care Scotland, who run the charity, said: “Danielle has been fantastic.”

Sheryl McMahon, from stillbirth and neonatal death charity Sands, said she believes cuddle cots “help with the healing process in the long-term”.

We previously revealed that Danielle feared a drug given to Junior at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital played a part in his death.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said a review into his birth found that “the independent team who reviewed the care provided to the patient’s son during the 18 days of his life concluded it was appropriate”.
