Hill wants Wembley tribute for late dad

-

ROCHDALE boss Keith Hill will feel his late dad’s spirit when he leads his side out at Wembley tonight.

Sunday was the first anniversary of the death of Hill’s father, also called Keith, and he still feels his loss keenly.

His old man was an inspiration throughout his career and Keith Snr was on the bench for Dale’s last trip to Wembley in the 2008 League Two play-off final.

Now Hill hopes to deliver a fitting tribute when his team bid to shock Spurs in their FA Cup replay.

He said: “Dad has been my hero as far back as I can remember. He would stand there watching me play in all weathers.

“The last time we were at Wembley he was on the bench so that was good.

“Wembley will be a tip of the hat to my dad because I know he will be there.”

Hill, 48, watched his six-year-old son play football in the freezing cold on Sunday and little Sidney will be a mascot tonight to continue the family’s association with Wembley.

The Dale gaffer said: “It has come full circle. My dad used to watch me and I was doing it on Sunday with my boy Sidney.

“He’s a mascot but won’t be on the bench because he messes about too much!

“We have to play the game, not the occasion. Yes, it’s a dream to play at Wembley but it’s an even bigger one to win there.”
