BREAKFAST TV host Piers Morgan was branded a “numptie” after he described Auld Lang Syne as an “English anthem”.

The outspoken presenter was introducing a Chinese choir who sang the famous ballad on ITV show Good Morning Britain when he made the blunder.

Morgan, 52, insisted the song written by famed Scottish poet Robert Burns was English but said he couldn’t remember who wrote it.

He was quickly hit with a barrage of criticism from Scots including ITV colleague Lorraine Kelly, who mocked him with Scottish put downs.

Lorraine wrote on Twitter: “FFS @piersmorgan – Auld Lang Syne could not BE more Scottish! You are a galloot, a numptie and a choob!”

She was backed by Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson who said her comments about the host were “correct”.

Morgan responded with three emojis of fish taking bait and said: “You’ll be telling me Rabbie Burns isn’t Welsh next.”

Burns wrote the lyrics to Auld Lang Syne in 1788 and sent a copy to the Scottish Musical Museum.

The poet acknowledged that versions of the song had been sung in Scotland for many years but said he was the first to put it on paper and he is thought to have contributed most of the lyrics now sung.

Auld Lang Syne is traditionally sung to usher in the new year as the clock strikes midnight.
