RIVAL’S WARNING FOR JOSH

- MICHAEL GANNON m.gannon@dailyrecord.co.uk

WINSTON CAMPOS has warned Josh Taylor he’s out to wreck the Scottish star’s Hydro homecoming.

The Nicaraguan hardman has been drafted in at the last minute to face the Tartan Tornado for the WBC Silver super lightweight title after Humberto Soto pulled out with a week to go.

Taylor is ready to return to the scene of his Commonwealth Games gold triumph in 2014 but Campos insists the Hydro cauldron holds no fears after he survived the lion’s den in Mexico.

The 25-year-old has only twice fought outside Nicaragua but said: “I have no fears fighting in Glasgow. Everyone tells me there is going to be a huge crowd.

“But it won’t bother me. I went to Chilpancingo in Mexico to fight Edgar Puerta and it was crazy. There were 4000 Mexicans screaming against me. I didn’t care. I used it as a motivation.

“There will be an even bigger atmosphere in Glasgow. It will be like a funfair and the Scottish fans will think they will have a party with Taylor.

“They probably don’t know much about me or expect me to win. But I will win their respect by beating their man. I’ll spoil the party but they will be happy to see a great fight.”

Campos landed in snowy Scotland on Wednesday and immediately tried to turn up the heat on Taylor.

The Central American scrapper said he had a present for the Scot up his sleeve – then pulled out his left fist.

There was a heated head to head where Campos leaned in aggressively and Taylor admitted he was tempted to kick off the scrap early.

The Prestonpans puncher said: “I don’t know if he was trying to smell me or kiss me but he just about received a welcome to Scotland with a Glasgow kiss.”

Taylor has been warned he’s up against a tough customer who grew up the hard way.

Campos said: “I didn’t have an easy life as a kid. You have to fight every step of the way and a boxer’s life is even tougher.”

The Nicaraguan has lost just three of 38 fights – with five draws – and is unbeaten in four years. He said: “This is my chance to step up to world level and I am going to take it.”

On the undercard, Niddrie ace Jason Easton will fight Glenn Foot for the Commonwealth super lightweight crown.

Home hopefuls Charlie Flynn, Joe Ham, Iain Trotter and Lee McGregor are also out to maintain undefeated records.
