Not Dunne yet being a superhero

WELL STAR TURNS CABBIE Kind-hearted Chaz plots route all the way to final

UBERMAN Charles Dunne insists he’s not finished giving Motherwell fans a lift – as he wants to drive them all the way on the road to Hampden. The defender has been hailed a hero after driving around town picking up pedestrians stranded in the snow. Dunne became an internet sensation after a video went viral of the 25-year-old star taking people home who had been caught in the chaos caused by the Beast from the East. Fir Park chief Alan Burrows branded the centre-back a superhero but Dunne insisted he was happy to help and would love to steer the club to Scottish Cup glory. Speaking to Record Sport Dunne said: “The response has been unbelievable. I have been getting loads of messages. People kept asking me to pick them up! “A few of the Motherwell boys have been on to me too. They’re saying I’m the designated driver now. “I don’t mind. It’s a good laugh. I love it. If we can get through in the Scottish Cup against Hearts I’ll drive all the fans to Hampden!” Dunne couldn’t allow pedestrians to get blasted by the storm and was determined to help out, even if the folk he was rescuing had no clue he was a Motherwell player. He said: “Our game with Aberdeen was off so I was in Motherwell just coming back from the gym and the weather was getting worse. There were people on the streets really struggling.

“It was a proper blizzard and the wind was blustering. I just thought that could be my mum or gran out there and I would want someone to stop for them.

“I thought, ‘I’ve got a 4x4 and that’s what they are made to do.’ I managed to pick up three of them and get them home.

“There was another lady with shopping bags but she said she was all right because she only lived around the corner.

“I was just trying to do my bit. One of the men had a walking stick and it took me 20 minutes to drive him home. How long it would have taken him to walk it in those conditions?

“You don’t want to think about it. One little slip out there and god knows what could have happened. I’m just glad I was there to help.

“They had no idea I played for Motherwell. I didn’t want any attention.

“I didn’t really mean for it to go all over the internet. I put it on my Snapchat and one of my friends said I should put it on my Instagram.

“To be honest the reaction from everyone is a little bit embarrassing as I was only doing what anyone would do in that situation.”

Dunne is loving life at Motherwell following his summer switch from Oldham and feels right at home with the Fir Park family.

He has played a key role so far and after going all the way to the Betfred Cup Final he would love a repeat in the Scottish Cup.

He said: “I had no idea what to expect when I came to Motherwell but I have absolutely loved it. There a real family atmosphere.

“It’s been a good season so far but we would love to get back to Hampden again.” FED-UP fans deserted Arsene Wenger as Arsenal were torn apart by Manchester City for the second time in five days.

The Gunners boss cut a forlorn figure at a half-empty Emirates as his side shipped three goals in 33 minutes, losing by the same scoreline as the Carabao Cup Final.

The fans who turned up booed their team off at halftime and chanted “You’re not fit to wear the shirt”.

Asked if they can compete with City – 30 points ahead of them – Wenger said: “It doesn’t look like that for you at the moment but we have to put things in perspective.

“The players have been through a lot of difficulties. We have to accept City are above us. The difference in the league is no coincidence.”

On the crowd he added: “You can’t be euphoric after what happened on Sunday and again tonight. The weather explains it as well.”

Bernardo Silva curled into the top corner before his namesake David rattled in then Leroy Sane finished off a sublime team move.

Nicolas Otamendi hacked down Henrikh Mkhitaryan for a second-half penalty but City’s Ederson denied PierreEmerick Aubameyang.

City are 16 points clear and boss Pep Guardiola said: “These are the last steps to be champions – you keep going until the end.” Arsenal 0, Man City 3. Betis 0, Real Sociedad 0; Las Palmas 1, Barcelona 1; Alaves 0, Levante 0. Caen 1, Lyon 0.
