Cops raid cafe after late-night report of burglary.. only to find devoted staff member preparing Mother’s Day treats

- JANE HAMILTON

POLICE swooped on a cafe in the dead of night to catch a burglar – who turned out to be a devoted baker working late to prepare Mother’s Day treats.

The drama unfolded when a concerned member of the public reported spotting a “suspicious” man and hearing lots of banging coming from inside the Bon tea room in Corstorphine, Edinburgh.

Half a dozen police, including two plain-clothed officers, raced to the St John’s Road cafe shortly after 11pm on Tuesday and surrounded the shop.

They could hear noises coming from inside and banged on the front and back doors to let whoever was inside know they were outside – but their shouts were ignored.

After a “standoff ” lasting 30 minutes, with dozens of residents looking on from their windows, there was much hilarity when the “burglar” emerged.

It turned out the baker was blissfully unaware of the scene outside – because he was listening to music on his headphones.

One resident said: “There was a call to attend a possible break-in taking place at the tea room.

“Six officers attended and for 30 minutes they banged on the front and back doors and shouted ‘police’ very loudly but were ignored.

“Eventually, the door opened and there was this confused baker wondering why there were so many police officers outside his shop.

“He’d been working late to prepare for the Mother’s Day rush and listening to music on his earphones, so didn’t hear all the commotion outside.

“It was hilarious – but well done to the cops for attending so quickly.”

Bon’s manager said yesterday: “It was just a small thing and no big deal.”

A police spokeswoman confirmed officers went to the scene after receiving a call.

She said: “They attended and discovered it was a false alarm with good intent.” VOTED
