VINYL PARTY IS SET FOR RECORD

- RICK FULTON

MORE than four million vinyl albums were sold in the UK last year.

No wonder this year’s Record Store Day is bigger and better than ever before, with more than 240 shops stocking versions of old favourites or exclusive editions from the likes of ABBA, Shaggy, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones and Lulu.

Record Store Day was started in America in 2007 and adopted the following year in the UK. The event was designed to keep independent record shows going, and celebrate vinyl as the digital age decimated the buying of physical copies.

This year’s Record Store Day takes place on April 21 and is a key part of the musical calendar for many of the artists involved.

Noel Gallagher, who, it seems, will spend much of the year in Scotland doing huge gigs, is releasing remixes of his single It’s a Beautiful World for this year’s event

He said: “I love Record Store Day. It gives us, the artists, a chance to put music out there that otherwise might never see the light of day.

“I love the fact that the items are very limited edition and I do utter the phrase, ‘I’ll save that for Record Store Day’ a lot.

“Here’s a question though – since when do we have ‘stores’ in the UK?”

Noel, who plays the SSE Hydro, Glasgow on April 24 and Aberdeen BHGE Arena the next day, will also headline the BBC Music’s The Biggest Weekend in Perth on May 26, his own show at Edinburgh Castle on July 19 and Electric Fields Festival in Dumfries & Galloway at the end of August or start of September – with the dates yet to be confirmed. The tracks will be released on limited edition monochrome, dipped 12in vinyl. Andrew Weatherall provides a vocal mix and darker dub on the A-side. On the B-side, legendary Hacienda residents Mike Pickering and Graeme Park join forces to provide a mix which harks back to the heyday of the legendary Manchester nightclub. This is the first remix the duo have made together in more than 25 years. For us, a stand-out this year is the Motorhead
