O’Neill war of words
REPUBLIC OF IRELAND boss Martin O’Neill has revealed he was left “very disappointed and surprised” by comments from Northern Ireland gaffer Michael O’Neill criticising the FAI’s recruitment policy.
Under FIFA rules players born in the North can play for the South and earlier this week Michael O’Neill slammed the FAI for being selective in their approach, claiming that they target Catholics to switch allegiance to the Republic.
He added he wanted a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ with the former Celtic boss to ensure the FAI would not pursue 17 to 21-year-olds who have already represented the North.
The O’Neills have enjoyed a positive relationship in charge of the respective Irish sides but clearly Martin was not amused.
He said: “I met him (Michael) at a game recently at Craven Cottage and we had a very convivial conversation. He never mentioned these particular points. I wish he had done, privately.
“So it came as a surprise. I’m the spokesperson for the Association (FAI), particularly at senior level, and I’m disappointed at the comments. I’ve told him that.
“I don’t think it’s an accurate portrayal of my time (as boss). In fact, it’s not true at all.
“I’ve had a conversation with him since and he has admitted I have not taken a single player from him; in fact, quite the opposite.
“I think he has taken Alex Bruce (from the Republic) during my time so I’ve not taken one senior player at all.”
