GARY NOT SAVING A MEMORY

- EUAN McLEAN sport@dailyrecord.co.uk

GARY WOODS doesn’t remember much about the instinctive wonder save that clinched Hamilton’s last Premiership win.

But the keeper doesn’t dwell on the moments of glory because he’d run the risk of letting the memories of the bad moments in with them.

So as much as his Accies team-mate David Templeton was handing out herograms for his stunning injury-time save that denied Partick Thistle an equaliser Woods took it in his stride.

Because the week before he had made the howler that gifted Rangers the lead and all the momentum to go on and deliver a painful 5-3 defeat.

Woods, right, who will strive to shut out Motherwell in today’s Lanarkshire derby said: “I didn’t know too much about it to be honest, it was just instinctive.

“Sometimes you throw yourself out and save it, sometimes you stand and watch it go in.

“Obviously it was an important save against Thistle but the lads did the hard work. They got us in the lead and I was just doing my job to keep the ball out of the net.

“But after making a mistake the week before to lose a goal against Rangers it was nice to redeem myself and get that over and done with.

“Being a goalkeeper the harsh reality is if you make a mistake nine times out of 10 it’s a goal. It’s about limiting the number of mistakes you make in a season.

“If mistakes were happening every week I’d be disappointed and the gaffer would have replaced me.

“But if you get to February before your first real mistake then I think you’re having a successful season. So what’s done is in the past and I’m only looking forward to the derby now.”
