Quitting Bairns was best move for Baird

-

JOHN BAIRD reckons Paul Hartley’s Falkirk clear-out proves he was right to leave the Bairns when he did.

The striker wants to fire Morton a step closer to securing a play-off place against his old club today.

Baird left Falkirk for Inverness in the summer after fearing what the future would hold when Peter Houston announced it would be his final year in charge. And the 32-year-old – who moved to Cappielow last month on an emergency loan – believes his decision was justified.

Baird said: “I had an offer of a new contract but the big thing for me was that Peter Houston was in his last season. My fear was that when he did leave I might have been in a vulnerable position as a senior striker and one of his players.

“The new manager has got rid of a lot of the experienced ones so I made the right decision.”

Falkirk keeper Robbie Thomson reckons the team that bounces back better from Scottish Cup defeats could come out on top.

He said: “Morton are coming off the back of a similar result against the other half of the Old Firm and it will be about who responds best.

“There’s not much between the teams in the Championship and it’s often decided by fine margins. It’s about who handles the occasion the best.

“There’s 10 games left so let’s just have a go and make sure we don’t have any silly slip-ups.”
