China president can rule for life
CHINA’S Xi Jinping has effectively become president for life after winning a rule change yesterday.
The National People’s Congress endorsed the constitutional amendment with 2958 in favour and just two against.
It overturned a rule that limited China’s president to two five-year terms.
Shen Chunyao, chairman of the Legislative Affairs Commission, denied it would lead to “strongman rule”.
He said: “That does not exist.”
