HUNDREDS of passengers were forced to fly without their luggage yesterday when Glasgow airport’s baggage handling system broke down.

Furious travellers said they were told their luggage would be left behind when they were on the plane after seeing it being stored in a makeshift “holding area” in the terminal.

Airport chiefs said a breakdown of the luggage belts at both terminals affected up to 250 passengers and led to a backlog as baggage handlers struggled to keep to schedule.

One passenger, who was travelling to Amsterdam, described the situation at the Paisley terminal as “chaos”, saying it led to angry scenes and huge queues building up in the terminal.

He said: “I’ve been sitting on the tarmac for 40 minutes and they are now saying I’ll have to travel without my checked in luggage.

“It may or may not be brought to me later. This will have a big knock-on effect as flights are running late and leaving minus luggage.

“There are a lot of hacked off people. Our luggage was stuck in a wee holding area when we handed it in. It didn’t look very secure to me at all.”

Other frustrated passengers resorted to tweeting the airport for information as they waited to take off.

Karen MacKellar wrote: “Why are you boarding flights when the baggage system is apparently broken and they won’t leave remotely on time.”

Christopher McKay tweeted: “What an absolute farce at Glasgow airport with baggage system.”

An airport spokesman said: “Staff are working with our airline partners to ensure all luggage items are dispatched to the passengers affected as soon as possible and we would like to apologise for the inconvenience they experienced.”
