Show star was hilarious and caring off stage too

-

SIR Ken Dodd was a “larger than life” character according to Scottish variety show sisters who worked with him.

The McLean sisters were signed to the same agency and appeared regularly on the same stage as Sir Ken in theatres around the country.

Shirley and Melody McLean, and their late sister Pam, worked with the comedian and performer during the 70s and 80s and were saddened to hear of his death on Monday.

Shirley said: “He was larger than life. The first time we appeared with him he asked us to sing a Scottish song but we didn’t know any.

“He would always ask us to sing the Diddy Men song but would say our accents weren’t Scouse enough.

“He used to call me Buzby, from the telephone TV advert because I was always on the phone.”

The sisters, who were also backing singers for Cilla Black, were invited to one of his shows at Glasgow’s Pavilion as recently as 2014.

Shirley added: “We had a wonderful time and sat in the dressing room afterwards reminiscing.

“He really was a lovely man. He was caring, a great singer and naturally funny off stage. There’s a statue at Lime Street Station. Liverpool will be in mourning.”
