BOMB SQUAD RACE TO BUS STOP ALERT

- SALLY HIND s.hind@dailyrecord.co.uk

A BOMB squad were called out last night after a “suspicious item” was found at a bus stop.

The street was sealed off by police as experts worked to determine whether the object presented a threat to the public.

A robot was used to inspect the item in Edinburgh’s Newhaven Road, with one resident sharing footage of the incident on Twitter.

Another tweeted that the street was on “lockdown” and said she had been told to stay indoors by officers, who were alerted at 5.45pm

Officers confirmed about three hours later that the item was “non-viable” but would not give details of what it was.

A spokesman said: “It posed no risk to the public.”

Investigations into the full circumstances are continuing. The incident comes after a suspicious package found in the city centre on January 11 was found to be an explosive device with potential to cause harm.

The discovery had initially been considered an “elaborate hoax” by police.

The force were alerted to the object at a shelter in Princes Street Gardens and sealed off the area as bomb disposal teams moved in to carry out a controlled explosion.

Six weeks later, police revealed investigators had found the item to be dangerous, with the ability to harm people and property nearby.

Hundreds of hours of CCTV footage have been examined and several people who were in the gardens have been interviewed in what officers called an “extensive” investigation.
