A TORTOISE stolen from a popular tourist attraction has been found abandoned in a park.

Huck, a seven-year-old red-footed tortoise, had been dumped by his kidnappers without any shelter from the elements.

He had been missing for 16 days after being snatched from his enclosure at the Edinburgh Butterfly and Insect World on February 21.

Huck – who needs a specialist diet and equipment to keep him alive – was spotted by a pair of dog walkers in a park in the Muirhouse area of Edinburgh on Thursday evening.

He was collected by the SSPCA the following day and was recognised by his markings.

Despite his ordeal, Huck was found to be in good health by a vet who microchipped him before sending him back to his home at the tourist attraction.

He spent two days resting and is now back on public display.

Lyndsey Paget, one of Huck’s keepers, said: “We’re so happy to have Huck back home with us at Edinburgh Butterfly and Insect World.

“We really missed him and so did our visitors. Everyone has been absolutely overjoyed to hear that he is safe and sound.”

Scottish SPCA animal rescue officer Sarah Auldsmith added: “We’re so pleased to have helped Huck home. The caller noticed him as her dog was rolling near him so she took him home before giving our animal helpline a call.”

Police are continuing their investigation into Huck’s theft.

Constable Ian Worrall from Dalkeith Police Station said yesterday: “It’s a great relief that Huck has been found and is doing well.

“However, we are still looking to trace those responsible for his theft. If anyone can help, then please contact us immediately.”

Those with information can contact Dalkeith police station via 101 and quote incident number 1883 of February 21.
