I’ve knocked out cancer ... now for a world title

EXCLUSIVE KID HAS HEART OF LION Brave battler Lee fears no man after flooring Big C

THE scriptwriters for the Rocky sequels would shrug it off as too far fetched but if ever there was a boxing story that deserved the full movie montage treatment it’s Lee Welsh’s tale.

The Larbert youngster is just 13 and could go all the way to becoming world champion in the ring one day – yet he has already won his biggest fight.

Never mind the Eye of the Tiger. He has the heart of a lion.

The Larbert High School pupil is like a lot of boxing prospects, with a bedroom full of medals and trophies, including the Scottish Intermediate School Boy Championships, silver medal from the BG Tri Nations and a Monkstown International Box Cup title.

But his most hard-fought crown doesn’t need polishing to keep it shining.

Lee was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in early 2016 – an aggressive form of cancer.

But there’s a reason Lee won the Unsung Hero award at last year’s Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards and it’s the same reason he can now count world champions and famous footballers among his friends.

The youngster accepted a heavyweight contest and decided he’d knock it out, winning the backing of the likes of Carl Frampton, Anthony Joshua, Josh Taylor and players from his beloved Rangers along the way.

Beating the Big C was the major W on his record – but now
