Froxy strike gives Sons survival bid a boost

- LINDSAY HERRON

DIMITRIS FROXYLIAS was the Dumbarton match-winner as they grabbed their first league win in over in three months to breathe new life into their survival bid.

The Sons made heavy weather of beating Brechin but with Inverness losing at Dunfermline they moved to within six points of the Highland side in the fight to avoid the play-offs.

The result delighted boss Stevie Aitken who said: “We’ll give it our all in the remaining games.

“If we can win another couple the teams in front of us might worry. I’m delighted for the players as they have been giving me their all.”

Froxylias won the points with one of the few moments of quality in the game but the Sons could have been more emphatic winners had they not passed up two early chances.

Kyle Hutton might have scored after six minutes when Liam Dick’s cross deflected into his path at the back post but he miskicked his shot.

The former Rangers midfielder almost made amends with a terrific run in 28 before finding Froxylias but he ballooned his shot high over the bar.

However, the Cypriot did score eight minutes before half-time when he showed great technique to bend a left-foot shot into the net.

Ian Russell missed a chance to make it 2-0 just after the break and that gave City hope but they had no cutting edge and are still seeking a first league win after 26 matches.
