TWO people have been arrested over the death of a 63-year-old man found injured in the street yesterday.

Police said they were treating the death of Tam Craig as murder.

He was found in a town centre street in Greenock at about 1.30am and died later in hospital.

Detectives confirmed a man and woman, aged 44 and 43, had been held and were being questioned last night.

Police were called to the scene in Dalrymple Street following reports of a disturbance.

Much of the town centre remained sealed off throughout yesterday.

Police were also carrying out inquiries near the scene and studying CCTV images from the area which could hold vital clues.

Tam’s wife Jacqueline was too upset to talk about his death last night at her home in Port Glasgow.

A family friend said: “She is too upset and trying to deal with it. No one knows what happened.

“We are close family friends of Jacqueline and she has not been told anything at all. It is a huge shock.”

A source said: “This appears to have been a street fight of some sort.”

Detective Chief Inspector Fil Capaldi appealed for anyone with information on the case to come forward.

The crime scene is close to a Tesco supermarket, an exhaust centre and a Mecca bingo hall.

Two taxis – one of them a beige Skoda Octavia – were the subject of police forensic checks outside the National tyres and exhaust centre, which had its shutters down.

The taxi company involved – Inverclyde – said they could not comment.
