A SURVEY has revealed the biggest challenge women face with their skin is not, as you might expect, wrinkles or lines.

In fact, scientists at L’Oreal found what bothers most of us more than anything else is our skin looking tired.

Tired, dull skin can give away our age just as much as lines and wrinkles.

And unless you’re that rare person who has a good sleep every night, has no worries or stress and gets plenty of exercise, you might need a helping hand from a few beauty products to help your skin look as if you’ve had nothing but eight-hour sleeps.

Here is our guide to the best buys for faking a good night’s sleep and banishing tired-looking skin long term. OVERNIGHT SENSATIONS Overnight treatments are a great way to fake the effects of a decent night’s kip and wake up looking wonderful.

These products take advantage of the fact that your skin is more permeable during the night, making it more receptive to the benefits of essential oils and other moisturising ingredients. Among the standouts in this category is the miracle-working GlamGlow Dream Duo Overnight Transforming Treatment (£42). It consists of a hydrating serum and moisturiser, which reduces the appearance of fine, dry lines and pumps the skin with shots of reinvigorating green coffee, hyaluronic acid and essential vitamins.

Also worth checking out are Lancome’s Overnight Recovery Sleeping Mask (£42) – one of the biggest skincare hits of last year, which reinforces the skin’s natural barriers while you sleep and leaves it looking fresh and bright – and the original “sleep in a bottle” buy, Guerlain Midnight Secret (£20.50). LONG-RANGE RADIANCE RESTORATION If tired, dull skin is an issue and you want to tackle it head-on rather than using quick fixes, there are plenty of excellent options to look at – but they tend to be pricey.

The newly reformulated Dior Dreamskin Perfect Skin Creator (£79) is a fab choice if you want to sort out the tiredness issue. It can be used morning and night for both an instant pick-me-up effect and a long-range improvement, because it encourages the skin to produce more collagen and elastin.

Sisley Black Rose Skin Infusion Cream (£134) is a beauty editor’s favourite thanks to its luxurious texture and smell, combined with its ability to plump and smooth the skin and restore radiance. MORNING FACE SAVERS Are you prone to waking up looking more tired than you looked when you hit the sack? If so, then it might be worth splurging on a primer or mask.

The best of the recent instant radiance-boosting primers are Chanel Hydra Beauty Flash (£45) and Estee Lauder Genuine Glow Priming Moisture Balm (£30), which hydrate the skin while immediately providing the impression of a muchimproved complexion thanks to lightdiffusing technology that blurs lines.

Similarly, Charlotte Tilbury’s Brightening Youth Glow (£38.50), a clever skin-brightening treatment, also provides longer-range benefits, including tackling redness and discoloration by reducing the skin’s production of melanin.

And if it’s the skin around your eyes that gives away how tired you are, then Chanel’s latest launch, Blue Serum Eye (£57), is just the job. It de-puffs, decongests and reduces dark circles. AND IF YOU’RE CAUGHT SHORT… If you don’t have any of these sort of flattering primers in a morning emergency, you can always counter the effects of tired skin with some cunningly applied make-up.

A dusting of a subtle highlighter, such as Benefit Dandelion Twinkle (£24.50), along the top of the cheekbones and a pop of cheek colour and hint of bronzer from Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze Blush & Glow (£60) will help your skin look less lacklustre.

For the area under the eyes, a brightening concealer – Dior’s Flash Luminizer Radiance Boosting Pens (£29 each) are great – will bring you back to life.
