RANGERS have extended the contract of Daniel Candeias until 2020.

The Portuguese winger has earned a new deal on the back of a fine debut season in which he has scored six goals and chipped in with a league-best eight assists.

The 30-year-old fans’ favourite follows the lead of team-mates Wes Foderingham, Alfredo Morelos, Declan John, James Tavernier and Josh Windass who have also recently penned new contracts.

Candeias, who signed last summer in a £700,000 deal from Benfica, revealed the lure of winning trophies was the driving force behind signing his new deal.

He said: “The people want us to win trophies and so do the players. This is the greatest club in the world when it comes to trophies and now I want to win trophies with Rangers too.

“I love wearing the shirt and will give 200 per cent for this club.

“I am very happy here as it is like a family. Everyone has welcomed me so well and my family are so happy with the city and the people. When everything is like this it makes it so much easier.

“I am very happy with my performances but that is down to the team playing well. In these seven or eight months I have worked hard for the team and now I want more of the same.”

Rangers have also been boosted by the return to action of skipper Lee Wallace and midfielder Graham Dorrans, although it was a match to forget as they went down 3-0 to Brentford at Murray Park.

The Bees raced to a three goal half-time lead, capitalising on a free-kick from a Dorrans foul and a penalty when Wallace upended Bradley Clayton. Coach Billy Kirkwood said: “The main objective was to get the five first-team lads some game time so we ticked the box for that.”
