MUSIC superstar David Bowie’s son has revealed his Modern Love for an old-fashioned Aberdeen rowie.

Duncan Zowie Jones took to social media to ask how to conjure up his version of the city’s famous buttery.

The film director, producer and screenwriter asked: “Can anyone tell me if the ‘t’ in this recipe stands for tablespoon or teaspoon?”

Jordi Lopez replied: “It’s clearly ‘tons’. Tons of sugar and sea salt.”

Duncan, son of Starman David and his first wife Angie, was called Zowie as a child and only began using the name on his birth certificate when he turned 18.

He probably acquired a taste for the breakfast treat when he went to school at Gordonstoun, near Elgin in Moray, in the 80s.

The 46-year-old posted photos of his efforts to his Twitter followers as they baked.

Duncan said: “Hope there are a few Scots awake right now… can’t tell you how excited I am. Making my first rowies from scratch. They’re in the oven right now.

“Only 13 minutes to go and it’s Aberdeen roll city around here.”

And even if the finished rowies looked more like a cross between a buttery and a croissant, they looked tasty.

Duncan tweeted: “You know what – they don’t look awful. Top side showing the layers, bottom side flat and toasty, ready for MORE butter.

“I’m gonna give this a 7/10. Good first try. Needs more salt. They may taste better after they cool down.”

A rowie, Aberdeen roll or buttery is a savoury bread roll similar to a flattened croissant.

Their high fat and salt content is believed to have made them ideal to be taken on long trips to sea.
