From Back Page part of his big introduction, McLeish dug out a collection of Scotland’s greatest hits to inspire the group in their quest to qualify for a first major finals since France 98.

McLeish’s dark blue movie included the crowning moment of his first spell in the national hotseat – the glory goal in Paris scored by James McFadden who is now part of the new manager’s backroom team.

And Norwich centre-half Hanley said: “We met up on Sunday night and had our first meeting with the manager. It was good for him to speak to all the boys together for the first time.

“He just wanted to get us all together and make sure we know we can achieve something with Scotland. He told us we all have the ability and talent to do it.

“Within that he explained what he expects from us.

“He spoke to us and also showed us video footage. It showed some of the good moments Scotland have had down the years, going back in time but also more recent stuff as well.

“That kind of motivational stuff works. If you watch those moments it does inspire you.

“Faddy’s goal in Paris was included, for example, and stuff like that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

“The boys are just excited to get started now.”

And Hanley believes McLeish’s decision to bring talisman McFadden back into the fold could prove to be a masterstroke.

He said: “James can definitely add something new and it’s great to add what he brings to being around the squad.

“Hopefully he can put his views across and help us get to where we want to be.”

But Hanley admits all the motivational tricks and McFadden-inspired feelgood factor will count for little unless the players find a way of turning it into wins.

Hanley said: “Winning more games would be a good start. We need to get that winning mentality, that’s important.”
