Yellow alert

Fans cry foul over price of Scots strip

SCOTLAND’S new yellow away kit has left fans seeing red – over the £103 price tag.

The bright strip was revealed by the SFA yesterday, with Leigh Griffiths and Andy Robertson among the stars modelling it.

Some supporters welcomed the switch from the pink away kit worn by the national side in recent years, which many in the Tartan Army believed was “cursed”.

But the cost of the new Adidas gear left fans dismayed, particularly when Scotland won’t even feature in this summer’s World Cup.

The adult shirt will set punters back £60, with another £28 for shorts and £15 for socks.

Youngsters wanting decked out like their heroes will see parents balking at the £80 cost. The junior shirt is £45, with £23 for shorts and £12 for socks.

Hearts fan Alan Meikle tweeted: “Reasonable new Scotland away top. SSC (Scotland Supporters’ Club) discount thankfully brings it down to an affordable level for your average millionaire.”

Another supporter tweeted: “New Scotland away top is cracking. Not ‘grown adult paying £60 for a football top’ cracking, but cracking all the same.”

The new home kit, unveiled in November, also costs £103. That sparked criticism at the time, too.

The away strip comprises a yellow shirt with navy piping, navy shorts with white piping, and navy socks with white piping. It’s a throwback to the classic Mexico ’86 top.

Apart from the price, it attracted generally positive views online.

One fan wrote: “Oh wow, that Scotland away top is a screamer!” Another posted: “The new yellow is a great strip. Think I’ll buy my 1st Scotland strip since France ’98.”

An optimistic supporter said: “Hope we play like Brazil now.”

The change from the pink pleased Martin Mackay.

He wrote: “Might stand a chance of qualifying now.

“Pink has been synonymous with away day failures over the last 10 or so years.”

The SFA said the away strip was available to buy exclusively from JD Sports.

The kit will be worn for the first time by Alex McLeish’s Scotland against Hungary in Budapest next Tuesday.

The SFA could not be reached for comment on the kit’s cost last night.
