It’s Lew murder for Rocky Sons

Morgan mauls ’em as Saints hurtle towards Premiership

- ST MIRREN ........ 5 DUMBARTON ... 0

LEWIS MORGAN was again the standout as super Saints moved to within eight points of the title as they tore Dumbarton apart.

The 20-year-old attacker scored two fantastic goals and set up another while Cammy Smith, Danny Mullen and Gavin Reilly all got in on the goal action.

With Dundee United flopping again, there is surely no stopping the Buddies now with just seven games remaining.

Delighted boss Jack Ross said: “Lewis will grab the headlines again for the quality of his finishes and he should do.

“But every time we were in the last third we were a threat. Cammy was outstanding, Ryan Flynn showed what a good player he is and Stephen McGinn was great in the role he performs.

“We’ll be very difficult to catch. The players can see it now. They know if they keep winning games they will get there.”

Saints nearly made an early breakthrough when Smith robbed David Smith in three minutes, burst into the box and tried to beat Scott Gallacher at his near post but the keeper saved well.

But the Paisley fans didn’t have to wait long for Morgan to show his class when he fired the Buddies ahead in 13 minutes.

It was all about the endeavour of Flynn as he shook off Liam Dick and burst down the right side.

He clipped the ball inside for Smith, who picked out Morgan on the left side and the Celtic loanee curled a shot into the right corner.

Morgan looked as though he had reciprocated in 23 minutes when he burst inside and set up Smith but Craig Barr made a fine block.

There was a warning to Saints in 27 minutes when Sons’ Kevin Nisbet won a corner. Andy Stirling BERWICK......... 2 played the ball in and Kyle Hutton was unmarked at the back post but headed over.

Saints won a corner of their own two minutes later when Kyle Magennis’ whipped delivery saw Gallacher lose flight of the ball with Smith clearing off the line.

Keeper Gallacher, however, was left exposed in 33 minutes when Mullen drove in a low cross and Smith showed great desire to get on the end of it and bundle home.

McGinn shot narrowly wide in 40 minutes and Flynn somehow scooped a shot over right before half time after being set up another great piece of play by Morgan.

And it was Morgan who was the architect of the third goal as he terrorised Sons again.

He used his skill to hit the byline on the left side, drove over a low cross and Mullen got in front of his marker to slam the ball home.

Mullen might have grabbed his second goal in 65 minutes when Magennis picked him out with a corner but headed wide of target.

His replacement Reilly grabbed the fourth six minutes later when Morgan slipped the ball to Stelioss Demetriou who played in Reilly.y. Gallacher got a hand to his shott he couldn’t keep it out.

With four minutes remainingg Morgan saved the best to last withh a sensational strike from 22 yards..

Sons Boss Stevie Aitken said:: “When you have a team that lostt a cup final, and in the manner wee lost it just three days ago, it hass drained them and it’s only natural..

“To try to pick the players upp and come and play the leaguee leaders – well, the league winnerss because let’s face it, the league’ss over – was a big, big ask.”

ELGIN........... 2 BERWICK twice came from behind in an entertaining draw at Shielfield.

Elgin took the lead in 40 minutes from a corner when Stephen Bronsky, with his back to goal, turned and hit a low shot into the net.

In 69 minutes the Wee Rangers levelled after a sweet half-volley from Jack Hamilton but Darryl McHardy turned and fired into the roof of the net to restore Elgin’s lead in 75 minutes.

Just a minute after coming on Aaron Murrell, found the target with a low drive from 20 yards out – his first touch three minutes from time.
