- Michael Pringle

A GRANDMA nearly died after a paper cut on her finger got infected.

Marguerite Henderson, who went into septic shock, now faces having both her hands and feet amputated.

A GRANDMOTHER is set to lose her hands and feet – after suffering a tiny paper cut.

Marguerite Henderson, of Crosshill, Fife, was left fighting for her life when the cut became infected and she went into septic shock.

The 55-year-old made a miraculous recovery but was then given the horrific news that her hands and feet will have to be amputated.

Her eldest daughter Kim Donnachie, 27, said: “Mum was absolutely distraught and thought she would be stuck in a bed for the rest of her life. “She thought it would have been better if she hadn’t pulled through.”

The family have now launched a fundraising campaign to buy her a bionic hand, prosthetic legs and electric wheelchair. Marguerite, who worked in family support at Fife Council, was rushed to hospital at the end of February – four days after her seemingly trivial injury.

She was put into an induced coma and placed on a ventilator as her organs began to fail.

Kim said: “We were told there was a high possibility that she might die.

“Mum was in a coma for a week but to the doctors’ amazement she finally came round.”

Marguerite, who lives with her youngest daughter Emma, 18, is set to have surgery on Tuesday.

Surgeons plan to remove her left hand and part of her left arm below the elbow.

It’s hoped that they can save part of her right hand.

Her feet will be operated on later but doctors have warned she could also lose part of her lower legs.

Kim said her mum doesn’t even remember how she got the paper cut on her finger.

She added: “It’s hard to comprehend that it has caused all this.”

The family have already raised more than £6500 of their £80,000 target.

Kim said: “Mum is more upbeat now and can see that there is a life for her worth living if she manages to get the bionic hand.

“She wants to make the most of her life and enjoy being a grandmother.” ● To help Marguerite, go to www.justgiving.com/crowd funding/kim-donnachie.
